Spain Villa

NEW BUILD SPANISH COASTAL VILLA

The Brief

Our client had recently returned from living in Hong Kong and our brief was to design the interior design and lighting for this 3 storey modern take on the traditional Spanish hacienda style villa. It is set by the beach within the dunes/forest area. This also included lighting the external areas to enhance the enjoyment of the patio, gardens and swimming pool areas. There was also to be a ‘pretty’ summerhouse by the pool for the young children to play in when the sun was hot.

The Challenge

Our main challenge during this project was the advent of covid 19 meaning site visits were not possible as the building works progressed. Also, the building program slipped by 6 months due to the construction workers not being allowed on site and further complications were that the team changed due to other commitments. The continual stop starts of the project had a most frustrating impact on the client and the design team. The language was also a challenge on our Zoom calls but we all managed to make ourselves understood : )

In terms of the lighting design, the internal lighting design was quite straightforward, but the external lighting design was more complex. We worked closely with external landscapers Taylor Tripp Design who produced a planting plan and an irrigation plan. The soil was mainly sand so top soil was needed to be brought in before they could start planting after which we could start laying the lighting cables. We had to be careful when specifying the external light fittings as they had to be non-corrosive due to the high salt content in the atmosphere.

THE Solution

In terms of the Covid 19 restrictions we managed to finish our lighting plans and specification. However, the team that had originally started was replaced (including the electrical contractor) so there was extra work in bringing him up to speed with the lighting plans and specification. We spent a lot of time on Zoom making sure they were au fait with all our plans and detailed drawings for slot detail and joinery linear lighting. With a new electrical team on board, we doubled up on so much work in order to avoid mistakes.

We took advice on the external lighting fixtures and bought the verandah pendants and wall lights from a specialist supplier.

The Final Result

The villa is a stunning example of a new old beach side Spanish hacienda with blue and white tiles on the outside and tiled risers to the main staircase. With the lighting we created an inside/outside feel by subtly employing light outside to create interesting vistas and visually connect all the parts together. We decorated the inside of the summerhouse with fairy lights which were visible from the verandah.

The clients plan to spend as much time as they can there with their young family. The budget for the client was exceeded due to the unforeseen delays. We also spent more time than anticipated and quoted for in our Fee Proposal.
