GEORGIAN HOUSE COMBINED WITH QUEEN ANNE HOUSE

The Brief

Our Brief was to come up with a contemporary interior lighting scheme for this unrenovated Georgian House to be combined with the adjacent Queen Anne property situated in the centre of a pretty market town.

The Challenge

A number of the original small rooms were to be opened up on the Ground Floor, but maintaining all the original features, to provide one large open plan space combining the kitchen, dining room and living room. So our challenge in lighting this large area would be to create a sense of unity but at the same time emphasise the zoning with the lighting. The living room was a rather patched up space which needed a focal point. The client wanted to keep an open fire and have their prize (very large) B&O TV installed on one side of the fireplace, which we wanted to ‘hide’. This is a large house and to prevent the client having to endlessly turn on and off lights, we suggested a wired Lutron Homeworks lighting control system.
The main cloakroom was an extraordinary shape with 5m high ceilings, quite dark and a very odd bulge in the wall in the middle of the room to accommodate an old fireplace which couldn’t be opened up.

THE Solution

In the rather soulless Living Room we designed a ‘floating’ fireplace shelf finished in polished plaster, which we lit from below, to create a wow factor and a main focal point. The large TV needed to be hidden and the client didn’t want any kind of joinery or faux painting concealment, so we used a charcoal grey polished plaster finish thereby allowing the large TV to melt into the background. The zoning in the large open plan area was so much easier to design with the Lutron Control System where we could set various scenes from a combination of our prescribed circuits.

With the odd shaped cloakroom we decided to create, with light, a glamorous space. The walls were finished with polished plaster to help dance the light around and we created layers of light set off by a super luxe chain chandelier.

Throughout we needed to keep the period architecture in mind when designing the light, aiming to ‘draw’ the architectural features with light. We set floor recessed uplights in the hallway to uplight the spectacular arches as well as washing the floor with light to show the original stone texture.  The general light was directed at the walls and reflected back into the hallways.

For the external landscaping lighting, we worked closely with Taylor Tripp Landscape Design and gave a light touch to the stunning gardens, lighting the David Harber sculpture, the rose arches, cut flower meadow and drawing the perimeter with light.

lace which couldn’t be opened up.

The Final Result

We created a stunning home for the client. The beautiful Georgian, Queen Anne architectural bones encapsulating an elegant contemporary interior.  The client was thrilled with the result.
