The Brief
Our client was a private members club set in 48 acres by the Thames in South London. Our brief was to redesign the lighting to the multi-functional Terrace Room which is a beautiful Grade II* listed orangery.
The Challenge
This is a multi-function room so therefore had to be lit for quite a number of different events.

As the orangery was Grade II* Listed we could not recess into the existing marble floor or recess into the space above the glazed roof. This was problematic as we wanted to highlight the internal pillars as well as the peripheral pillars, and some of the tables would be positioned under the glazed roof so needed lighting from above. There was a challenge to get enough light into the glazed area as we could not wire or recess in this area.

THE Solution
In order to uplight the peripheral pillars we built mini plinths at the base so that we had somewhere to set the recessed uplight and hide the fitting and wiring. We could only do this to the pillars around the periphery as we could only get the wiring to the edge of the room - as we were not able to disturb the marble flooring. We recommended mini festoon lights be wrapped around the internal pillars for some of the scenes, such as wedding breakfasts. These would have to be battery powered and switched on and off manually.

In the glazed area we set very narrow beam spotlights (7º), with a superior light output of 800 lumens, on the edge of the glazed roof, as far as we could get the wiring, to be directed where the centre of each table would be. We specified spotlights with deep set baffles and honeycomb lenses for each fitting to prevent any potential glare.

To add some more mood lighting to the glazed area we set three large pots outside with ground recessed uplights and spike uplights in the pots to bring light into the room.

We recommended a Dali dimming protocol which would future proof the space enabling the circuit combinations to be changed in the future. Also, a wireless lighting control system to enable 8 different pre-set lighting functions.
The Final Result
We used a Lutron HomeWorks lighting control system which enabled the lighting for the 8 different functions to be pre-set and controlled by a set of buttons on the wall control plate. This is now so much easier for the catering team to set up, as they press the various functions as required and then move the furniture accordingly. The lighting is now sufficient for people to read during various talks and lectures and the elegant proportions of the beautiful room are highlighted with the peripheral lighting set for cocktail and drinks parties. For the weddings and wedding breakfasts the room really comes alive with the elegant subtle lighting.

Testimonial
“The lighting scheme really showcases this beautiful room, and the club are very happy with the result.”
